In the world of countertops, beautiful does not necessarily mean durable.  Solid granite, for example, is the epitome of elegance, but it absorbs stains and can crack when exposed to extreme hot or cold. If elegance is a top priority for you, then you may not mind the work it will take to maintain it. To the other extreme, laminates are quite durable, but much less visually appealing.

There are many options in between, but having a good idea of where you are on the scale can be helpful in narrowing them down. Prioritize the qualities you want in a list, and then take the list with you when you go to visit local Atlanta dealers.  Ask a sales associate to help you find materials that will best match your needs.  

Consider how you want to feel in your new kitchen, also.  Do you want to feel like a master chef?  There’s nothing like wall to wall stainless steel to help you.  Perhaps you’d like a feeling of southern comfort, a feeling that mirrors your hometown of Atlanta?  Slate and soapstone are good for creating a southern atmosphere.  But if you don’t know what materials create what mood, that’s okay.  Again, know what your expectations are so that when you speak with Atlanta dealers, they’ll have a better idea of what to show you first.
